A new group of officers of the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has started arriving in Bulgaria. They have been rotating every four weeks since 2009. Gradually, their number on the Bulgarian-Turkish border will triple compared to the end of 2023, the Bulgarian Border Police said on Thursday.

Frontex officers are briefed on the current situation and assigned to their specific locations. They include ID experts, cross-border crime-detection officers, dog handlers and EU border guards who will support the Directorate-General for Border Police.

The joint operation with Bulgaria is part of the first Frontex contingent, along with operations in Romania, Moldova and Georgia. Its specific objective is to provide technical and operational assistance to national authorities at Bulgaria's air, land and sea borders.
