A Polish national who illegally aided foreigners to cross into Bulgaria has received a custodial sentence and fined on an indictment filed by the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office, the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office said on Wednesday.

On October 14, 2023, at around 12.15 p.m., on the Trakiya highway, the man illegally assisted 12 Syrian nationals to cross into the country. 

Pre-trial proceedings were conducted in the case and the investigation was concluded with the submission of an indictment to the court.

The man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year and three months' imprisonment regime, and a fine of BGN 2,000. In addition he will have to pay the sum of BGN 44 830,40, representing the monetary value of the car which he was driving.

The sentence, based on a plea agreement, is final.
