The memory of the medical officers who died in the war for Bulgaria’s liberation was honored with an official ceremony in front of the Doctor's Monument in Sofia on Monday. Among the attendees were Health Minister Hristo Hinkov, Vice President Iliana Iotova, Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) head Hristo Grigorov, representatives of the Military Medical Academy, professional organizations, citizens.

In her address, Iotova said, "Every spring we come here to lay wreaths and flowers, because memory is alive and is not subject to political calendars or to conjuncture, but only to what we all Bulgarians carry in our hearts - the gratitude, and the self-confidence of a nation that is rising as a new state and that has the strength to acknowledge this gratitude." Iotova also drew attention to the war in Ukraine and pointed out that the BRC has again shown that it is important to preserve humanity, kindness and lending a hand, because it is in years of war that these human values begin to have a different meaning.

Grigorov said that on the monument are inscribed 531 names of fallen Bulgarian and foreign medics, and 31 years ago the Bulgarian Red Cross took the initiative so that this monument could be consecrated. "Standing here, we bow our heads and will never forget what was done for our freedom," he said.

Wreaths were laid at the Doctors Monument on behalf of President Rumen Radev, the Russian Embassy, the Bulgarian Doctors Union, the Bulgarian Association of Health Care Professionals, and hospitals in Sofia, among others.
