Twenty-two organ donor situations occurred in 2023, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency reported on its website.

In the last such situation for the year, on December 31, the relatives of a 35-old brain-dead woman at Sofia's St Anna University Hospital decided to donate her organs and save other people's lives.

In Bulgaria, 48 patients (42 Bulgarian nationals and 6 citizens of other EU Member States) received donated organ transplants in 2023, the Agency said further. A couple of days ago, the Agency's Executive Director Ivanka Dineva presented Life Donor statuettes to the relatives of the donors.

The Health Ministry and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency offer their sincere condolences, gratitude and respect to the bereaved families for making a decision to save human lives at a harrowing moment. The credit also goes to the medical-treatment facilities' teams engaged in the donorship and transplant process.

By December 7, 2023, 895 patients were on the waiting list for transplants: 806 for kidney, 17 for liver, 30 for heart, and 6 for lungs.
