An organ donation situation in Sofia's Pirogov Emergency Hospital has given a chance at life to a Polish patient awaiting transplantation in Warsaw, the Medical Supervision Executive Agency reported Wednesday. On November 19, the relatives of a 79-year-old woman, who was pronounced brain dead, made the decision to donate her organs.

Due to the lack of appropriate recipients in Bulgaria, the woman's liver was donated to the Polish Transplant Coordinating Centre within the EU's International Organ Exchange. Doctors from Pirogov assisted the Polish medical team during the explantation.

The Health Ministry and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency extend sincere condolences to the woman's relatives and express gratitude and respect for their noble decision made at such a hard moment. The Agency also expresses gratitude to the medical teams from Bulgaria and Poland involved in the organ donation and transplantation.

A total of 20 organ donation situations have been utilized since the start of 2023. The latest one is from November 16, when the relatives of a 76-year-old man, also pronounced brain dead, in Panagyurishte's Uni Hospital decided to donate his organs. His liver gave a second chance at life to a Romanian national.
