A total of 816 pre-trial proceedings against organized criminal groups and individuals for crimes related to the production, possession and distribution of narcotic substances, and 216 pre-trial proceedings for illegal human trafficking and illegal migration were initiated in the period October 1-31, according to the third monthly analysis of the data on the work of the Specialized Interagency Unit between the Prosecution Office and the Interior Ministry, the press centre of the Prosecution Office said on Wednesday.

As a result of the work of the Specialized Interagency Unit in October, 515 specialised police operations were carried out to counter illegal migration and 560 specialised police operations to counter drug-related crime. The number of illegally staying third-country nationals detained was 1,103, the majority of them in Sofia and Stara Zagora.

Among the typical cases was a specialised police operation on October 3 on the territory of Sofia, carried out with the assistance of Europol, during which an organised criminal group was counteracted for smuggling foreigners across the border and helping them to stay or cross the country. More than EUR 10,000 and documents, including rental and car purchase contracts, were seized.

In connection with drug related offences, 904 persons were arrested and 10 laboratories/plants for production and cultivation of drugs were uncovered.
