site.btaMRS Warns of Strong Wind in Mountains on Monday

The weather in the mountains is mostly sunny and clear, but with strong wind in places – on Mt Botev the wind is almost reaching hurricane levels, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) told BTA on Monday.

As the weather is expected to worsen, the MRS advises people to check on the forecast before hiking. Mountain rescuers also remind that it is getting darker earlier in the mountains, temperatures are dropping at night and there may be icing at higher parts in the morning.

A rescue action was carried out in the area of Mt Vihren on Sunday. The victim is a foreign tourist who was alone in the mountain, which made it difficult to locate him, but he was rescued by the Bansko squad. The tourist has multiple fractures.

The reasons leading to the accident were inadequate equipment and underestimation of the conditions in the mountain, the mountain rescuers said.
