Supplying coastal missile systems for the Navy is a priority, said Deputy Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov during a visit to the Chayka naval air base on Friday. He said that supplying submarines for the Bulgarian Navy is still being considered.

“In the new security environment we are relying more and more on the Bulgarian armed forces,” said Zapryanov, adding that the Navy is fulfilling its duties. He voiced hope that in 2024 the defence expenditures will reach 2% of GDP. This will allow the modernization of the armed forces to continue, which is the smaller problem, said Zapryanov. According to him, the larger problem is the staffing of the armed forces, as many formations continue to be undermanned. Solving this problem requires changes to the social package for servicemen, career prospects and increased pay, said Zapryanov.

The Deputy Defence Minister observed a demonstration of the naval special forces at Chayka naval air base. Among the guests were Deputy Defence Chief Lieutenant General Mihail Popov. Senior officers, and foreign guests. The demonstration took place within the Breeze 2023 international naval exercise.
