On Friday, Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov met with representatives of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament, the Prosecutor's Office announced.

The EP delegation, led by MEP Sophie in 't Veld, also includes MEPs Clare Daly, Erik Marquardt, and Elena Yoncheva. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prosecutor General Maria Pavlova, the administrative head of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office Iliana Kirilova, and Deputy City Prosecutor Hristo Krastev.

The meeting discussed the reform of the prosecution in the context of the expected changes in the Constitution, including the risks this could lead to an increase of political influence over the independence of the judiciary. The discussion focused on the criticism of the draft presented by the entire judicial community, academics, NGOs, and the European Commission for Democracy through Law of the Council of Europe (Venice Commission).

The Acting Prosecutor General briefed the representatives of the European Parliament on the disciplinary proceedings initiated against magistrates aimed at improving the organization of work in the prosecution service, the release said.
