PM Denkov to Austrian National Council President: Austria Will Benefit if Bulgaria and Romania Are Accepted into Schengen

Austria and the Netherlands will benefit if Bulgaria and Romania are accepted into the Schengen area, said Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov during his meeting with Austrian National Council Chair Wolfgang Sobotka on Tuesday in Sofia, the press centre of the Council of Ministers reported.

The European Union can manage the migrant crisis only if it realizes that all Member States must protect its external borders together, he added. “This involves not only funding, but also equipping with technical means and reinforcing with people. This is exactly why we have invited border officials from Austria, the Netherlands and other European countries to come to our external borders," Denkov pointed out.

"Schengen and Dublin do not function", Sobotka was adamant. He voiced Austria's concerns about the migrant wave flooding the country and gave a concrete example: “Vienna is the third largest ‘Serbian’ city after Belgrade and Novi Sad' and there are many more migrants from various other nationalities in the country.”

Denkov expressed readiness to meet with Austrian parliamentarians during his upcoming visit to Vienna on October 24.
