On Friday, MPs will discuss at first reading a bill to amend and supplement the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. 

On July 28, on the last day of the first session of the 49th National Assembly, GERB-UDF, Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms submitted a joint bill for changes to the Constitution. 

The proposed changes include the confirmation and strengthening of Bulgarian statehood (including defining education, science and culture and the preservation of cultural and historical heritage as strategic national priorities; as well as a proposal to establish May 24, the Day of Slav Letters and Bulgarian Culture, as the country's national holiday); a structural reform of the Supreme Judicial Council; reform of the prosecution magistracy, including ensuring its accountability to the public; as well as determining the composition of a caretaker government, additional guarantees for the rights of citizens, transparent selection of independent regulatory and control bodies.
