Minister of Foreign Affairs Mariya Gabriel opened on Friday the annual conference of the Minister of Foreign Affairs with the heads of the foreign missions of Bulgaria at the Boyana Residence. The conference focuses on Bulgaria in a multipolar world: challenges, priorities, solutions, the press centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Ambassadors, Permanent Representatives in International Organizations and Consuls General of the Republic of Bulgaria, ministers and deputy ministers attended in the event.

Among the topics discussed are security and defence, the rule of law and Bulgaria's accession to Schengen, cooperation in the field of innovation, Bulgaria's accession to the euro area and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Opportunities for cultural diplomacy, cooperation in the field of education, work with Bulgarian communities abroad and topical issues for the Bulgarian diplomatic service were also discussed.

In her address to the forum, Foreign Minister Gabriel outlined the priorities of Bulgaria’s foreign policy: to be an active member of the EU, NATO, joining Schengen and the euro area, as well as membership in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

“Within the framework of our Euro-Atlantic values, there is more to achieve with the US and the UK. We should also look to other parts of the world - Japan, India, Latin America,” Gabriel said, adding that there needs to be clear procedures for career development of diplomats, and for upholding decent pay. About the update of long-term secondment allowances of diplomats, she said that a new structural regulation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to be adopted.
