Varna commemorated the 80th anniversary of the death of King Boris III with a military ritual and the laying of floral tributes at his monument.

Attending were Varna Mayor Ivan Portnih, Regional Governor Andriyana Andreeva, Municipal Council Chairman Todor Balabanov, local government officials, members of the non-government sector, citizens.  

Clergy from the metropolitanates of Varna and Veliki Preslav officiated a prayer service. 

The ceremony was organized by Varna Municipality in partnership with the Navy, the metropolitan and Bulgarian Patriots Associations. A speech recalled the contribution of King Boris to the rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian Jews. 

The monument to King Boris III in Varna was erected in 1995 by the Kingdom of Bulgaria Federation.

King Boris III was buried in Bulgaria’s largest and most important monastery, the Rila Monastery, but in 1944, the Communist-dominated government had his body exhumed. 
In 1993, his heart was reinterred at the Rila Monastery.
