site.btaUndeclared Currency Worth over BGN 390,000 Discovered at Kaptain Andreevo Border Checkpoint

Customs officers at the Kaptain Andreevo border checkpoint discovered undeclared currency in the amount of BGN 396,740 during an inspection of a truck, reported the regional press centre of the customs office in Svilengrad.

On August 21, a truck with a semi-trailer with Turkish registration, traveling from the Netherlands via Bulgaria to Turkiye, arrived at the checkpoint. The vehicle, driven by a Turkish citizen, was selected for a thorough customs inspection, during which packages of euro banknotes were found in the refrigeration unit of the semi-trailer. The undeclared money added up to EUR 202,850, which is worth BGN 396,740 BGN.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.

With this case, the discovered and confiscated currency at the border with Turkiye since the beginning of the year has reached close to BGN 22 million. According to customs statistics, throughout 2022, the total value of the detected illegally transferred funds through Kaptain Andreevo was about BGN 27 million.
