The new director of the regional directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Smolyan, senior commissioner Tsvetan Tsankov, took office on Wednesday, the Ministry reported. Tsankov was appointed by order of Minister of Interior Kalin Stoyanov.

Tsankov was introduced on Wednesday to the directorate's senior staff by Deputy Minister of Interior Kiril Tsenkin. The newly-appointed director comes from the Economic Crime Prevention Unit at the General Directorate National Police.

Tsankov was born in Pleven, north central Bulgaria, in 1966. Graduated from the Vasil Levski National Military University in Veliko Tarnovo. Master's degree in economic management and administration from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia. Joined the Ministry of Interior as an intelligence officer in the Economic Police Unit in 2000. Reassigned to the Economic Crime Prevention Unit with General Directorate National Police in 2007. Member of the interagency coordination centre at the General Directorate for Combating Organised Crime on a rotational basis since 2015.

Tsankov takes the post from the previous director, senior commissioner Kostadin Pachedzhiev.
