Residents of Yambol and left-wing politicians Wednesday protested against the stationing of a NATO multinational division headquarters near the city. A petition under the slogan "Yambol does not want NATO bases!" was organized in front of the central post office in Yambol.

The demonstration was organized by local representatives of The Left! Coalition. It was attended by Rumen Petkov and Tatyana Doncheva, leaders of the ABV and Movement 21 parties, respectively, which are part of the coalition. Representatives of Vazrazhdane and the Bulgarian Socialist Party were also in attendance.

The reason for the protest was a statement made by Defence Minister Todor Tagarev, who said that an infrastructure for stationing a multinational battle group in the region of Yambol is planned to be created.

"Tagarev does not make such decisions on his own, they are suggested to him. The current government is a puppet to a very high degree", Doncheva told journalists. According to her, Bulgaria can continue to fulfil its commitments as a member of NATO and the European Union, but without militarizing itself.
