One million vehicles have passed through the Greek checkpoint of Promachonas (opposite Kulata) on the border with Bulgaria since the beginning of the year, the chair of the Union of Police Officers of the Greek Prefecture of Serres, Giannis Kounios, told Greek state-owned television channel ERT on Monday.

This makes Promachonas Greece's second busiest border crossing point after Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos.

"In 2024, 8.6 million people and 2.5 million vehicles crossed the Promachonas border crossing. About half of the entrants head directly to Thessaloniki, while the rest head to the coastal areas of northern Greece. Traffic (this year) has increased by about 30% because passport control has been abolished," Kounios said.

Later on Monday, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov and Greek Deputy Minister for Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki will visit the Kulata–Promachonas border crossing. The three will then cross into Greece together, celebrating the free movement without border checks in Schengen.
