On November 13, 2014 the Rhodope Mountains are included in the pan-European initiative A Wilder Europe. The mountain is the seventh region included in the initiative to restore wildlife in Europe.
The Rhodope Mountains are ecologically linked to the wild areas south of the Bulgarian border: the southern slopes of the mountain of the same name and the Slavyanka Mountains in Greece. In the west, the Rhodopes reach the northern Pirin Mountain and the Rila Mountain. The Wilder Rhodopes Foundation is the organisation driving the work in the area and proposing a new vision for nature conservation with more space for nature, wildlife and natural processes.
The Rhodopes are very beautiful mountains, one of the areas in Europe with the greatest biodiversity and with huge potential for bringing wildlife back.
