Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria co-Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov Wednesday said that his coalition will not participate in Thursday’s no-confidence vote against the Zhelyazkov Cabinet so it can help secure this country’s top priority – joining the euro area. Denkov was speaking to reporters in Parliament ahead of a debate on the motion.

The motion of no confidence, submitted by the Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) parliamentary group on April 10 over corruption, is backed by the MPs of Vazrazhdane and Velichie.

“They are trying to frame this vote as a choice between fighting corruption and securing Bulgaria's entry into the euro area. In fact, one of the most powerful tools for fighting corruption is implementing all European oversight mechanisms - some of which are still missing in Bulgaria,” Denkov added.

CC-DB co-Floor Leader Nadejda Iordanova said that “what is happening in the 51st National Assembly shows that there is no anti-corruption majority in Parliament that is ready to stop MRF – New Beginning leader Delyan Peevski from exercising power without legitimacy”. She added that the debate will be “throwing dust in people’s eyes”.

Iordanova said that “there seems to be a pro-Russian majority in the 51st National Assembly, which is clear from the government's intention not to finalize the sale of the Belene NPP project's reactors, but to restart it”.

CC-DB Deputy Floor Leader Lena Borislavova rejected claims that her coalition and the MRF – New Beginning are supporting the ruling majority. In her words, the problem lies with GERB leader Boyko Borissov, “who refuses to isolate himself from MRF - New Beginning”. BSP-United Left and There Is Such a People, both of which signed the declaration about creating cordon sanitaire around Peevski, also showed that they do not want to distance themselves, Borislavova said, accusing them of shady dealings with Peevski.
