A total of 24 weekends dedicated to outdoor cultural life start in Bucharest on Saturday. Every weekend from April 12 to October 12, one of the oldest boulevards in the Romanian capital, Calea Victoriei, will be closed to traffic and transformed into a meeting, art and walking space for residents and visitors.
The Open Streets project is organized by the Romanian Association for Culture, Education and Normality (ARCEN) and supported by the Bucharest Municipal Administration. It was launched with the end of the state of emergency due to the COVID pandemic and aims to encourage residents to use urban spaces for recreation, as well as to give a chance to traders affected by the pandemic.
The first weekend's programme will include stilt performers, jugglers with circus acts, a character parade, performances, concerts, workshops and guided tours. Participants are invited on an architectural treasure hunt, exploring the hidden histories of the buildings on one of Bucharest's most iconic streets.
Last year over one million residents and visitors of Bucharest participated in the Open Streets project.
