New trees were planted on the campus of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) on Wednesday, the organizers from BAS said. The tree-planting effort was organized by the Forest Institute, which prepared a landscape design, provided planting material and took care of the logistics. The saplings were supplied free of charge by the State-owned forestry enterprises in Elin Pelin and Etropole.

The goal of the initiative is to improve the working conditions for the BAS researchers, create a more favourable environment and make the campus look better. The project will also create a green area for recreation and outdoor work, which will also be open for use by the residents of the neighbourhood.

The Man and Society Institute coordinated the work team and was responsible for information dissemination, while the Astronomy, Space Research and Technology Institute assisted in preparing the terrain for planting and will participate in the subsequent care of the saplings.

The initiative took place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Forest Week, which is celebrated between April 7-14.
