On this date in Bulgarian history:
1879: Imperial Russian Commissioner Alexander Dondukov appoints Ludovig Carbonneur first governor of Bulgarian National Bank (in office until July 1, 1879).
1904: Two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.8 points on Richter Scale hit area between Kresna and Krupnik (now in Southwestern Bulgaria), killing more than 200 people.
1981: Todor Zhivkov is elected Secretary General of Bulgarian Communist Party Central Committee (until November 10, 1989).
1991: The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria is established as independent NGO. Solomon Passy is elected first President of the organization.
2001: Former King Simeon II arrives in Bulgaria from Zurich and announces that he will settle permanently here.
2004: Twelve children are killed as Bulgarian tourist bus carrying 43 people, including 34 pupils, falls into Lim River between Serbia and Montenegro.
