Wind energy is one of the key solutions to unlock various technologies that can ensure climate neutrality by 2050, Martin Vladimirov, head of the Climate and Energy Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) said on Thursday. He was speaking at the opening of a conference "Unlocking the Potential of Offshore Wind Energy in Central and Eastern Europe." The event, organized by the CSD, is taking place at the Sofia Balkan Palace Hotel.

According to Vladimirov, wind energy is overall cheaper than other renewable energy sources in the Black Sea region. This type of energy will lead to lower prices, which will have a positive effect on the economy, Vladimirov noted.

The CID director added that many projects are currently blocked by "coordinated disinformation campaigns and growing Russian influence."

Offshore wind capacity has the potential to reach a minimum of 15 gigawatts by 2035. This will unlock new investments and create jobs, Vladimirov stressed. He said this process will lead to the creation of a whole new industry, including equipment manufacturing, port infrastructure development, logistics services and other support activities.

An adequate regulatory framework is needed to achieve these goals. Vladimirov noted that such a framework already exists in Romania. He warned that unless such a framework is adopted in Bulgaria, large investors developing projects in more developed markets in Northern Europe will not target the Black Sea region.
