Cities are responsible for about 70% of global carbon emissions, caretaker Environment and Water Minister Petar Dimitrov said Tuesday at the Green Business is GREAT conference on green cities, which is being held at the Hilton Hotel in Sofia. The event is organized by the British-Bulgarian Business Association in partnership with the British Embassy and is under the patronage of Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev and Sofia Municipality.

Minister Dimitrov stressed that greener and smarter cities not only promote sustainable lifestyles but also offer significant opportunities for business development. He added that more and more people perceive environmental quality as a key factor for their well-being.

"The quality of life deteriorates when the urban environment is critically stressed," the Minister noted. He stressed the importance of sustainable development strategies, highlighting the success of initiatives that involve broad citizen participation in the process.
