President Rumen Radev said during a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres in New York that Bulgaria supports the UN's mission of having humanity's future shaped by development policies and not by military conflicts.

Radev highlighted the opportunity that the UN General Assembly provides to all countries, thanks to which the heads of state and government are on an equal footing, and their importance is determined solely by the strength of the messages they send to the world.

Radev and Guterres shared a common position that the military crises in Ukraine and the Middle East are threatening peace and stability and exacerbating divisions in the world. The Bulgarian head of State was hopeful that the UN Security Council would become an effective instrument to prevent military conflicts in a timely manner and would bring focus back on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Guterres said that strengthening peace, sustainable development and human dignity for current and future generations, which are the themes of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, should be common goals and should unite the entire international community, regardless of differences between countries. He also highlighted the important role of Bulgaria as a source of ideas and initiatives for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Radev and his wife Desislava Radeva attended a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden and his wife Dr Jill Biden to honour heads of state and government and their wives on the occasion of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
