site.btaBulgarian Academy of Sciences to Mark Its 155th Anniversary at Its Birthplace in Braila

A delegation of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) will visit Braila in connection with the celebration of the Academy's 155th anniversary.

BAS is a successor to the Bulgarian Literary Society, which was founded on October 12, 1869 in a house in Braila. The Church of the Ascension stands on this site now, and a memorial plaque in its courtyard reads, in Bulgarian and Romanian: "Bulgarian emigres laid the foundations of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1869 in a house that was located on this site."  

On Wednesday, Archpriest Kiril Sinev, who represents the Bulgarian Patriarchate in Bucharest, will celebrate a prayer service at the memorial plaque, and a wreath will be laid in the presence of members of the Hristo Botev Association of Bulgarians in Braila, local municipality officials and representatives of the Romanian Academy.

Also on Wednesday, the Bulgarian delegation is scheduled to confer with Braila Mayor Viorel Marian Dragomir is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Bulgarian delegation, which consists of the BAS President, Academician Julian Revalski, Bulgaria's Ambassador in Bucharest Radko Vlaykov and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev. Later in the day, a wreath will also be laid at the bust of Bulgarian revolutionary poet Hristo Botev in Braila.

As part of the observances of the 155th anniversary of BAS, an exhibition on the 200th anniversary was opened at the Romanian Academy Library on Tuesday.

On Tuesday in Bucharest, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences concluded a new cooperation agreement with the Romanian Academy.
