In a letter to the parliamentary groups in the 50th National Assembly, Bulgarian Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev wrote that he expects them to nominate a new Bulgarian EU commissioner by August 29, 2024, the Government Information Service said on Tuesday.

Glavchev recalls that Bulgaria has been approached with a request to nominate two candidates for a EU commissioner (preferably a man and a woman) by August 30, 2024, unless the country decides to nominate its incumbent commissioner.

On the basis of Member Countries' nominations, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make her selection and will lay the new lineup of the Commission before the EU Council.

"The Bulgarian EU commissioner is a projection of the long-term national priorities and policies at the EU level," the Prime Minister writes further in his letter. "The setting of the State's strategic objectives and their pursuit is a task of a regular government elected by the National Assembly. At this point, however, Bulgaria is in an unprecedented situation in which the executive power is exercised by a caretaker cabinet appointed by a presidential decree whose objectives and tasks are short-term and oriented day-to-day to ensuring a power transition and conduct of elections. According to the established procedure, the nomination for a EU commissioner should be approved by an act of the Council of Ministers, regardless of whether it is a regular or a caretaker government," the letter reads.
