The national government chooses Bulgaria's new EU commissioner, said EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Iliana Ivanova. She spoke to the media in Burgas after a meeting with Mayor Dimitar Nikolov and urged for patience.

"I can't discuss any names. We need to unite as a country for this decision. Let's wait for the Bulgarian government to decide. My role is very important. It covers innovation, research, and education. These are all important areas," she said, speaking on Bulgaria's forthcoming nomination for the post.

Ivanova said it is crucial for the country's representative to have broad public support. She added it was beneficial for Bulgaria to have a nomination within the European Commission's deadline. When asked about any discussions with her, Ivanova responded, "Let’s discuss this in a few days."

During her visit to Burgas, Ivanova will meet with the leadership of Burgas Free University. She is also scheduled to visit the International Youth Centre, where she will engage in discussions with young people and representatives of local youth organisations.
