Hungary's Ambassador to Bulgaria, Miklos Boros, presented the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the House of Europe here on Monday. Hungary took over the rotating Presidency on July 1, choosing Make Europe Great Again as their motto.

Boros said that this is a time of exceptional challenges. The Hungarian Presidency will have to ensure the coherence of the Council's work, in cooperation with the new composition of the European Parliament and the European Commission, while addressing the implementation and delivery of the strategic agenda for peace, security and prosperity of the EU.

Another priority that Boros spoke about was the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen by land and the lifting of border controls. He noted illegal migration as a key issue. Migration tensions play a big role for individual member states, especially those with external borders in the Union, such as Bulgaria and Hungary, he said.

The Ambassador said that closer cooperation with the countries bordering the EU is necessary. He said that Europe is lagging behind its global competitors, so it is vital to improve productivity and boost growth, which is why a new European competitiveness deal is a priority. Boros pointed to addressing agricultural policy and improving EU security as a priority.

Head of the European Commission's Representation in Bulgaria Yordanka Chobanova said that preserving European unity is a must at a time when Europe is facing unprecedented challenges.

Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes, Head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Representation in Bulgaria, noted the importance of upholding and defending the European values.
