The role of the winner of the elections is to secure a majority cabinet, said at a briefing in the National Assembly MP from Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) Assen Vassilev, commenting on the possibility of the new parliament to elect a regular cabinet.
"If the winner of the elections tries to secure this majority through some kind of agreements, gestures and emotional approaches, we have seen five times that this did not happen. I doubt it will happen on the sixth try. The only two governments that have been made since the beginning of the political crisis were made by CC, and CC-DB in the second cabinet. These governments have one thing in common - a clear legislative programme, a clear governance programme, a clear commitment to reforms, including tough reforms," Vassilev said.
The responsible thing for the country is to follow a pro-European anti-corruption orbit. This is exactly what was enshrined in the agreement that had to be signed for the rotation to happen. This was also set out in the legislative programme of the Denkov cabinet. It was implemented to a large extent, he added.
Vassilev did not make a forecast on the formation of a cabinet. "The elections made it clear that the voters gave the CC-DB the role of opposition. Unlike in previous parliaments, in which we were the second political force and therefore we had a mandate," he said. The most nationally responsible thing is not to overthrow a government before you know how you are going to make a new one, Vassilev added.
In his words, it is better to have a stable government with which the country can enter the euro area, but this is not a mandatory condition. "The important part in the report is that it comments on a stable government, but it does not put it as a condition. The moment we meet the inflation criterion, a caretaker cabinet can ask for an emergency report and we can enter the eurozone precisely because the legislative programme is fully adopted," he said.
Vassilev called on Parliament to form committees and work on its legislative part.
