Bulgaria should be represented at the NATO summit by the Prime Minister, Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) floor leader and former prime minister Nikolay Denkov told journalists in Parliament.
On Thursday, caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev sent a letter to the Chair of Parliament, asking her to decide who should represent Bulgaria at the NATO summit in Washington.
According to Denkov, Bulgaria should not be represented by President Rumen Radev, who was out of the country during the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Sofia. The CC-DB floor leader believes that if someone is brave and claims to have a firm position, he should be ready to defend it in the formats that are really important. In his opinion, President Radev's positions coincide with what is presented as the position of the Kremlin and Russia's leadership.
“I think the President is taking the wrong position, which is not in line with the Bulgarian interest, which is to keep the war as far away from our borders as possible,” Denkov said.
Another reason to be convinced that the Prime Minister should be the one to lead the delegation is that foreign policy is determined by Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
Bulgaria should have a consistent foreign policy, which according to the Constitution is led by the Council of Ministers and it should take a decision accordingly, Denkov explained. He stressed that so far the majority in the National Assembly has clearly shown that the pro-European direction should be followed, Bulgaria is protected when it is part of the EU and NATO. “Therefore, I have no doubt that our country should be represented by the Prime Minister in this case,” he said.
