Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev sent a letter to National Assembly Chair Raya Nazaryan and the parliamentary groups in the 50th Parliament with a request to decide who will represent Bulgaria at the NATO Summit on July 9 - 11 in Washington, the government press service reported Thursday.

For the first time, the newly admitted member countries will be involved and the allies are expected to unanimously adopt important decisions, Glavchev writes in his letter.

The decisions that will be taken at the meeting in Washington presuppose the fulfilment of long-term commitments by the allies, with a particular emphasis on investments in the defence of each NATO member country and long-term support for Ukraine and its financial provision, the letter reads.

Glavchev considers it expedient that the level of participation in the meeting from the Bulgarian side be determined after a ruling by the National Assembly as soon as possible, given the deadline for the procedures for registering the national delegations in the forum, which expires on June 21.

President Rumen Radev also commented on the case, announcing on June 3 that who will represent the country at the NATO Summit in July in Washington, by law, is decided by the Council of Ministers, but with all the resulting consequences, a historic responsibility for the official cabinet, because this is an existential Summit, it is not like others, this is where war and peace are decided. We must also take into account the legitimacy of the current Council of Ministers, the President pointed out.
