The Election Commission of India will announce the results of the election of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, on Tuesday. The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. local time.
The Election Commission will post updates on its website on how the count is progressing throughout the day. The Commission said that a record-breaking 642 million voters, including 312 million women, cast their ballots in the election, which was carried out in seven phases between May 19 and June 1.
As of 9 a.m. local time, the National Democratic Alliance, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, has a lead of more than 200 seats over the opposition INDIA bloc, local TV channels reported.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told the Press Trust of India news agency that the counting of votes had begun in all states and union territories.
As per the Conduct of Election Rules, the counting of postal ballots began first. The counting of votes recorded by electronic voting machines commenced 30 minutes later.
