Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev Saturday arrived on a two-day official visit to Hungary at the invitation of President Tamás Sulyok.

Radev was welcomed by his Hungarian counterpart with an official ceremony in the St George Square in front of Budapest's Sandor Palace. The anthems of Bulgaria and Hungary sounded and the delegations greeted one another.

The agenda for the day included a one-on-one meeting of two heads of State, plenary talks between the Bulgarian and Hungarian delegations, joint statements, and inauguration of a Bulgarian Cultural and Educational Centre in Budapest. The construction of the building was supported by the Hungarian government and the Bulgarian State.

A 2022 census in Hungary shows that the country is home to 3,770 Bulgarians.

The two countries maintain intensive cultural and educational exchanges. The Bulgarian Republican Self-Government in Hungary and the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Budapest are involved in various cultural activities. Established in 1952, the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Budapest was Bulgaria's first state representative cultural institution abroad, together with the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Warsaw, which opened around the same time.

Also on Saturday, the Bulgarian President conferred with Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the Hungarian parliament. Deepening bilateral cooperation in energy, economy, investments, culture, and education, was among the topics of discussion, along with issues on the regional and European agenda and the upcoming Hungarian presidency of the Council of the EU in July-December 2024.
