site.btaRomania Plans to Build New Airport Some 40 Km Away from Bulgarian Border

Romania plans to build a new airport some 40 km from its border with Bulgaria, according to information published on the official website of Bucharest Municipality’s Sector 4 on May 17. It will be located next to the village of Adunatii-Copaceni in Giurgiu County.

The project has an estimated value of around EUR 2 billion. Construction is expected to start in autumn 2025 and to be completed in 2029.

"The idea for the project has been around since 1973. Together, we have taken the first step with French partners Setec, who have extensive experience in the study, design and construction of airports worldwide," said Bucharest Sector 4 Mayor Daniel Baluta.

Bucharest-Sud Airport will be capable of handling more than 11 million passengers and will allow air transport of at least 30,000 tonnes of cargo. It will have a terminal area of approximately 81,000 sqm, and will also have a passenger apron with 4,500 seats, hangars for passengers, ground handling equipment, etc.

"This airport will be a connection point with the neighbouring country, Bulgaria, also a new member of the Schengen area. Our research shows that there are passengers from Bulgaria who use Otopeni Airport [Bucharest Henri Coanda International Airport] and who could benefit from the new airport in the future," said the head of the project, Aurelien Van Hecke.
