site.btaNewly-elected PES President Schmit Supports Bulgaria’s Full Schengen Membership

The newly-elected president of the Party of European Socialists, Nicolas Schmit, expressed support for Bulgaria’s full membership of Schengen at a news briefing on Saturday.  

He was elected president at a PES congress in Rome.  

“It is time for Bulgaria to join Schengen fully. I have always supported Bulgaria and Romania,” said Schmit. 

He said that Bulgaria’s EU membership had been discussed during the tenure of Sergey Stanishev as Bulgaria’s prime minister (2005-2009). “Bulgaria is a very active and important member of the EU. The country is important to the European security. It has to be supported and recognized, said Schmit.
