Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov's novel Time Shelter inspired the curator of the German pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024, the writer told BTA on Friday. The project is titled Thresholds and will be a clinic of the past, he explained.
The curator, Cagla Ilk, contacted him to ask him for suggestions for the realization of the project.
"The description of the pavilion itself begins with an epigraph from Time Shelter," Gospodinov noted. At this stage, he declined to give more details of his involvement as ideas were still being exchanged.
The press release, published on the pavilion’s official website, notes that Thresholds narrates history and the future from various artistic positions. “It stands for the present as a place where no one can stay and that only exists because one thing has occurred and another still awaits. For people with biographies characterized by migration, the temporal perception of the present as a threshold between the retrospective and the prospective is paired with a fundamental spatial and physical experience of living at the intersection of different belongings,” the release adds.
Gospodinov expressed his satisfaction that the Bulgarian pavilion is also linked to the past. "It is described in the novel [Time Shelter]- it [the past] can be a dangerous time. But it is also a time that, if we forget it, comes back. That is the paradox," he said.
