site.bta2023 Corruption Perception Index Report: Bulgaria among Worst Performers in EU
In 2023, Bulgaria scored 45 points according to the Corruption Perception Index report, placing it 67th globally and in the penultimate place in the EU, said Kalin Slavov, Executive Director of Transparency International Bulgaria. He presented the findings of the report at a BTA-hosted news conference on Tuesday.
The 2023 report shows that the country still hasn’t overcome significant problems with the rule of law and the oligarchic influence. According to Slavov, Bulgaria lacks an overall vision and energy in efforts for countering corruption.
Compared with 2022, Bulgaria gained two points from 43 to 45. Compared with 2012, its score has changed insignificantly from 31 points in 2012 to 45 in 2023.
The index is based on the basis of 13 different studies carried out by 122 independent international institutions and research organizations.
According to the index, for a second consecutive year Hungary is last in the EU with 42 points, Romania has 46 points, and Greece with 49, said Slavov.
Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland have the top scores globally and the worst, Yemen, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Somalia. The global score is 43, almost unchanged in the last years.
