Unions in the Skopje public transport company have called Skopje City Council to urgently convene a session and vote on the company's subsidies for 2024, or threatened to stop public transport on Monday.

The unions pointed out that by January 15, when the legal deadline was, the employees of the Skopje transport company had not received their salaries for December, which is also the reason for their insistence on an urgent meeting of the City Council. If there is no response to their insistence by Sunday, only students will be bale to use public transported on Monday, as that is when the second term of the school year then begins.

Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska stated that the responsibility for the situation lies with the City Council, because all proposals related to the work of municipal companies were submitted for voting, but the City Council Chair did not include them in the agenda of the previous meeting.

Tensions between the Mayor of Skopje and the City Council began after VMRO-DPMNE party withdrew their support for her despite backing her in the 2021 local elections.

There were also protests in the public transport company at the end of 2022, and in 2023 private carriers also protested.
