Cultural anthropologist Prof. Ivaylo Ditchev passed away on Monday, Sofia University reported.
Prof. Ditchev was a lecturer at Sofia University. He led the master's programme in cultural anthropology, and compiled the online cultural studies publication Seminar_BG.
Born in 1955 in Sofia, he was the son of writer Stefan Dichev.
In addition to Sofia University, he also taught in France, the USA and other countries.
He defended doctorates at Sofia University and at the University of Paris-VII.
Prof. Ditchev worked in the field of aesthetics, then turned to social sciences with a focus on political culture, urban anthropology and Balkan identities. His recent research interests were in the fields of citizenship, migration and the anthropology of space.
Ivaylo Ditchev was also a writer and active essayist, published in Bulgaria and Europe. He was awarded the Panitza prize for essay writing (1999), the Chernorizets Hrabar prize (2002) and the Dimitar Peshev prize (2005).
