One of the functions of the National Electricity Company (NEK) is to provide the necessary quantities of electricity for the regulated market, but this is accompanied by a price deficit, which has led to NEK accumulating a tariff deficit of about BGN 2.5 billion, NEK Executive Director Martin Georgiev said Thursday at the forum "Industrial Triathlon: Climate, Energy, Environment", organized by the Bulgarian Federation of Industrial Energy Consumers.

In 2022 and 2023, less than 10% of the electricity that NEK manages was sold on the open market. Once NEK's function as a public supplier is removed, this will relieve the company and allow it to trade this power on the open market.

The situation at Chaira Hydro Power Plant is severe as the failure was serious. However, Georgiev expressed belief that there may be working units in the fourth quarter of next year.
