site.btaChisinau Conference Retraces Bulgaria's Path from Liberation to Independence (1878-1908)

A conference marking 145 years since Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule and 115 years since the declaration of the country's independence was held at the Hristo Botev Library in Chisinau under the auspices of the Academic Society of Bulgarian Studies in Moldova (ASBSM). The First Secretary of the Bulgarian Embassy in Moldova, Nikola Todorov, greeted the participants.

The conference retraced the path travelled by Bulgaria during the period between the two events, ASBSM President Ivan Duminica told BTA.

The historian said the meeting was aimed to show how the three decades from the Liberation to the Declaration of Independence impacted the history, the literature and even the language of the Bulgarians. Speakers highlighted the role of Alexander Malinov, the Bessarabian Bulgarian who wrote the Declaration of Independence, the contribution of writer Ivan Vazov to the emergence of new literary genres, and the evolution of the standard Bulgarian language.
