The State Agency for National Security (SANS) has worked since January with partner agencies on the case of the three Bulgarians arrested in the UK for suspected espionage on behalf of Russia, said SANS head Plamen Tonchev.
He added that work has been very active, and the Agency had been notified of their arrests. Tonchev said that pretrial proceedings have been opened by the Sofia City Prosecution and the prime minister has been notified.
On August 15, the BBC said that three Bulgarians have been arrested on suspicion of espionage on behalf of Russia. The media outlet published their names and photos. The Bulgarians were arrested in February, but news broke out in mid-August. Since February they have been remanded in custody.
Later the Sofia City Prosecution Office said that pretrial proceedings were opened in March and that the information is classified.
