Health Minister Hristo Hinkov expects that no Bulgarian beaches will be closed this year due to pollution. He said that as he commented the aftermath of the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine. The Minister pointed out that there is no evidence of pollution in the Bulgarian area of the Black Sea.
The Health Ministry also measures the background radiation, which is done every year. Three or four such measurements are to be made this year. The normal radiation background can sometimes have some deviations but that has nothing to do with the Kakhovka dam. "My expectation is that no beach will close this year because of pollution," Hinkov said.
"If there is pollution from heavy metals, they settle far before they reach our coast, and they are the dangerous ones and can increase radiation background. So, according to specialists, there is no risk for Bulgaria," the minister said.
