Hundreds gathered at the Hadzhi Dimitar monument on Mount Buzludzha to mark the 154th anniversary of the death of the voivode Hadzhi Dimitar and his detachment, which set off in 1868 to free Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Despite the march's tragic end, it inspired many others to follow suit in the decede that followed and ultimately Bulgaria became an independent state in 1878.
