EU Affairs Council
Will Formulate Positions
in Defence of Bulgaria's Interests
Sofia, November 18 (BTA) - The EU Affairs Council will put
forward positions, which if approved by the government, will
enable ministers to defend Bulgaria's interest at EU summits,
said Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva on Monday after a
meeting of the EU Affairs Council.
Positions will be publicized to signal that the Council is
addressing policies that are key to national growth and that
overcoming disparities with EU standards is a primary goal for
the cabinet.
Kuneva said that there should be a clear political vision behind
national projects presented at EU summits. In the following
days, the EU is expected to discuss in the sixth Cohesion Policy
report, which is important to Bulgaria because the cohesion
policy aims to do away with disparities across the EU. Bulgaria
will insist that the deadline for cost eligibility under EU
operational programmes between 2007 and 2014 is extended by a
year.
Kuneva placed emphasis on EU's multiannual programme, the
European Investment Programme and the European Energy Union. The
European Commission will clear its legislative agenda with EU
member countries in advance to avoid delaying directives which
are met with opposition.
On November 19, at issue will be the European Investment
Programme and the European Energy Union. There are proposals for
quick action under a 300 billion euro investment programme for
funding projects that encourage rapid growth and job creation.
The Bulgarian projects, prepared by the caretaker government,
are to do with infrastructure and youth unemployment.
Kuneva outlined security of energy supplies and energy
efficiency as the most important issues in the debates of the
European Energy Union. During the current programming period,
EU's benchmark is to make buildings 30 per cent more energy
efficient, said Kuneva. PK/PP
