Haskovo, Southern Bulgaria, November 19 (BTA) - Four officials of the regional office of the Road Administration Agency in Haskovo were detained for taking kickbacks in a special police operation on Wednesday, Haskovo Regional Prosecutor Ivan Stoyanov told reporters. The raid took place on an alert that the four systematically took bribes, prosecutor Pavel Zhekov, who monitors the proceedings, said.

Money in leva and in euro, as well as noble metals were found in searches in the homes and cars of the four officials.

Zhekov said that the four were not checking the cars or drivers they were supposed to check but demanded and received kickbacks of 20 euro. An amount of approximately 300 euro was found in a cigarette pack lying close to the car of the team at the place where they worked - the Maritsa motorway near Svilengrad.

Seven similar cases were discovered in the course of one day and seven drivers were questioned before a judge. Three other drivers from whom bribes were demanded were also questioned before a judge on October 16, Zhekov said. LY/ZH
