EC Sends Letter of Formal Notice to Bulgaria and Four More Member States for Non-Transposition of Cybercrime Directive

Brussels, November 20 (BTA) - The European Commission said Friday it has addressed letters of formal notice to Bulgaria and four other countries for non-transposition of the Directive on attacks against information systems into national law. The Member States were required to transpose the Directive in full by 4 September 2015.

The Directive introduces a number of EU rules to support the fight against cybercrime. It defines criminal offences and sanctions in the area of cybercrime and aims to improve the reporting of cyber incidents to law enforcement authorities in the EU.

If no reply to the letter of formal notice is received, or if the observations presented by the Member States in reply to that notice cannot be considered satisfactory, the Commission may decide to move to the next stage of the infringement procedure, and send a 'reasoned opinion' to the Member States concerned. The Commission may then refer the cases to the Court of Justice of the EU, the Commission says.
