Sofia, October 9 (BTA) - Over the past year, the Bulgarian Accreditation Service Executive Agency (BAS) has produced 610 assessments and held 223 meetings of the accreditation committees, Deputy Economy Minister Luchezar Borissov said here Monday. He was speaking at the start of a regular audit of the European Co-operation for Accreditation (EA) organization, which makes an assessment of the BAS, the Economy Ministry reported.

The EA assessment, which is produced once every four years, is aimed at synchronizing and harmonizing international standards, practices, and requirements.

In Borissov's words, accreditation is of significant importance for today's society because it improves the standard of living and the quality of products and services, and everyone relies ever more on testing and certification as confirmation of safety and quality.

The BAS accredits conformity assessment bodies, including testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, medical laboratories, product certification bodies, management systems certification bodies, persons certification bodies, environmental assessment control bodies, and verification bodies.
