Sofia, October 27 (BTA) - Bulgaria observes the constitutional order of the Kingdom of Spain and the rule of law as fundamental values of the European Union and all its member states. Bulgaria supports keeping the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Spain. The country is Bulgaria's strategic partner and ally, reads a position of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry released on Friday.

The unilateral declaration of independence by Catalonia does not meet the legitimacy conditions and breaches the principles of the rule of law, as evidenced in the resolutions of the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Spain, the position goes.

Bulgaria expresses concern for possible escalation of the tension in the autonomous region of Catalonia of the Kingdom of Spain and urges all powers in the country to a constructive dialogue, responsibility, respect of the rule of law, and protection of the stability, unity and security of the people. Bulgaria believes in the ability of the Spanish government to cope with the difficult situation in accordance with the constitution of the country. The stability and prosperity of friendly Spain are important for Bulgaria, the EU and the European citizens. Unity, dialogue, solidarity and cooperation are the path to cope with the serious challenges facing Europe and the world, the position says.

On Friday the Parliament of Catalonia declared independence from Spain while the Spanish Senate approved the imposition of direct rule in the region.
